2nd Riga International Biennial of Contempary Art (RIBOCA2)

and suddenly it all blossoms

April 20 - September 13, 2020

Andrejsala, Rīga, Latvia

RIBOCA2 had to be reimagined. Initially planned to open on 16 May 2020 with a five-month duration, the project transformed into a feature movie and the exhibition and its film set took place from 20 August to 13 September, 2020 having brought together over 65 participants and 9 collectives, and welcomed over 21,000 visitors over 18 days.

RIBOCA2: and suddenly it all blossoms grew out of the urge to change our way of inhabiting the world through reaching out to other voices, sensibilities, and ways of making relationships. Understanding this extreme situation as a call for reinvention, the exhibition opened on 20 August across 200,000m2 of the historical Andrejsala industrial port in Riga, an area previously mostly restricted to the public, which allowed for social distancing and more outdoor and well-ventilated spaces. Works were installed outdoors across the waterfront, in empty lots, meadows and wastelands, in a former paintball field and within indoor spaces ranging from a hangar to the main RIBOCA2 port building.
