Skuja Braden Selling Water by the River
April 23 - November 27, 2022
Arsenale, Venice, Italy
For the Latvian Pavilion at the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia the queer artist duo Skuja Braden presented ‘Selling Water by the River’ – a rich installation of more than 300 objects, which featured new commissions alongside work from the last 20 years. The exhibition sees the artists move their shared living space, located in the Latvian town of Aizkraukle, to the Arsenale of La Biennale di Venezia. This personal recreation endeavors to address the shifting borders between private and public space within a wider social context.
Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, organized by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art Selling Water by the River was created by the core team consisting of Ingūna Skuja, Melissa D. Braden, Andra Silapētere, Solvita Krese, Līva Kreislere, Kitija Vasiļjeva, Aleksejs Beļeckis, Pauls Jēgers, Romāns Medvedevs and Rūta Jumīte.
